Marion
Chamber Co-sponsors Floodstock
Posted 1 July 2008
Cedar Rapids has experienced a devastating blow to the economy from the
historic flooding. When the river crested at almost 12 feet higher than
ever in recorded history, more than 3,900 homes were flooded as 1,300
city blocks were inundated with water.
Between 6,000 and 7,000 jobs were lost as hundreds of local and
national businesses were flooded. Early damage estimates are already in
the billions, and will rise.
It will take great effort to rebuild the economy to sustain growth in
Cedar Rapids. A group of local businesses have teamed up with the Cedar
Rapids and Marion Chambers of Commerce, the Jaycees, the Greater Cedar
Rapids Community Foundation, and several other local and national
organizations to help bring economic relief to individuals and
businesses affected by the flood.
The core of this effort will be an event, FloodStock 2008, to serve as
the vehicle to generate funds for relief.
Area businesses and organizations are coming together to host this
benefit concert this weekend at Cabo Grill, 2730 Edgewood Rd. SW in
Cedar Rapids.
Floodstock 2008 will be a three-day music festival featuring local and
regional bands on Thursday, July 3, from 4:00 – 10:00 p.m., Friday,
July 4, from 12:00 – 10:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 5, from 12:00 –
10:00 p.m.
Floodstock 2008 tickets will be available at the gate for $10 per
person. All proceeds from Floodstock 2008 will go towards residents and
businesses affected by the flood.
More than 20 popular local bands have agreed to play the event, with
more inquiring how to participate every day.
Floodstock 2008 event coordinators include representatives from the
Cedar Rapids Jaycees, Cedar Rapids Downtown District, Cedar Rapids Area
/ Marion Chamber of Commerce, Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation and
various businesses and media outlets.
National and local businesses are being called upon to offer any
donations and aid possible. Sponsorship positions are available for
corporations capable of offering significant help. National talent is
also being sought.
