Traffic Enforcement Program this Weekend
Posted 1 July 2008
In an effort to save more lives on Iowa’s roadways, city, county and state law enforcement are continuing their efforts to buckle down on those not buckled up.  This holiday weekend, officers from across the state will participate in Iowa’s special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) from July 3-6, 2008, in which local law enforcement agencies combine efforts to increase enforcement and awareness.

“Too many people still take the attitude that it will never happen to me.  But fatal crashes can, and do, happen every day.  We’ve made a lot of progress, but there are still too many people in Iowa dying because they are unbuckled,” sTEP Coordinator Randy Hunefeld said.  “That’s why this July and throughout the year, law enforcement agencies are increasing seat belt enforcement to ensure that drivers and front seat passengers in all vehicles are buckled up day and night.”

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  Though Iowa’s seat belt usage rate is currently 91% and continues to rise each year, the number of fatalities is not decreasing, but instead remains steady.  Last year in Iowa there were 445 traffic deaths, of which, 180 occurred in collisions involving individuals not wearing their seat belt.  Clearly, dozens upon dozens of these lives could have been saved if they would have taken the time to buckle up.  Additionally, Iowa statistics show that 45% of those who die in traffic accidents during the daytime hours are not using their seat belts, while that number increases to 62% during the night time hours.  In an effort to reduce the number of seat belt related fatalities and increase night time seat belt usage, this year the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is promoting night time seat belt enforcement.

Seat belts clearly save lives.  Unfortunately, too many Iowans still need a tough reminder.  That’s why law enforcement is going to be out in force this July, buckling down on those who are not buckled up.  Unless you want to risk an $83.00 ticket or worse, your life, please remember to always Click It or Ticket Day and Night.
