US House Approves Flood Relief Bill
Posted 20 June 2008
In session last night, Thursday, June 19, members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to appropriate more than $2 billion in aid for Iowa and other Midwestern states affected by recent storms and floods.

There was widespread support to approve a $897 million supplement to the $5.5 billion Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster relief fund. Members of the Iowa delegation appealed to House members for the additional aid and President Bush endorsed it earlier this week.

The funding directed to Iowa and other states in the region includes $606 million to the Army Corps of Engineers; $267 million to the Small Business Administration for disaster relief loans; $300 million for Community Development Block Grants; $300 million to the Economic Development Administration; and $480 million relating to agricultural assistance.

The U.S. Senate is expected to consider the spending bill next week.
