Anhydrous
Ammonia Leak Leads to Evacuation
Posted 20 June 2008
Jones County authorities responded to an anhydrous ammonia leak early
yesterday morning, Thursday, June 19, at River Valley Coop Elevator in
Martelle shortly after 3 a.m.
Around 40 residents in the immediate area had to be evacuated to the
fire station as a precaution. They were allowed to return to their
homes about an hour and a half later.
One Martelle firefighter received minor injuries and was treated and
released from Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. The Jones
County Sheriff's Office says leak was caused when someone tried
stealing anhydrous from a portable tank.
