Jones
County Added to Federal Disaster Declaration
Posted 18 June 2008
Jones County was added yesterday, Tuesday, June 17, to the Presidential
Disaster Declaration.
The disaster declaration makes federal money available to those
affected. Disaster assistance can include grants for temporary housing
and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses,
and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from
the effects of the disaster.
Individuals and business owners who sustained losses can begin applying
for assistance tomorrow by registering online at http://www.fema.gov or
by calling 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate
from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further
notice.
The other counties that have been declared disasters by the federal
government are: Adams, Benton, Boone, Bremer, Cerro Gordo, Crawford,
Dallas, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Hardin, Johnson,
Linn, Marion, Page, Story, Tama, and Union.
Iowa Governor Chet Culver has already declared 83 counties state
disaster areas. He has now asked for a Presidential Disaster
Declaration for all 83 counties. Under this process, the Governor
makes the request and FEMA makes the final determination on
eligibility. In addition, the Governor continues to ask for the maximum
available assistance from the Federal Government.
