Flooded
Areas Pose Risk of Injury
Posted 17 June 2008
Among the many health risks associated with flooding, personal injury
is the most common. As Iowans prepare to re-enter homes and begin
recovery and clean up efforts, public health officials are urging
caution to avoid personal injury.
“In the wake of the recent flooding across the state, it’s
understandable that Iowans are anxious about their personal property,”
said Iowa Department of Public Health Director, Tom Newton. “It is of
the utmost importance, however, that Iowans take every possible
precaution to protect their most precious possession—the health and
safety of themselves and their family.”
Iowans can prevent personal injury in several ways:
* Keep children and pets away from affected areas.
* Never enter floodwaters where power lines are down.
* Step carefully to avoid falls and wear protective
gear, including eye protection
* Make certain the electricity is off before
checking electrical circuits and equipment or when checking a flooded
basement. Do not turn on any lights or appliances.
* Be aware of potential chemical hazards in flood
waters.
* Gas powered generators, power washers, and other
equipment can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Use this equipment
outside, in a well-ventilated area only. NEVER run a generator,
pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside a basement,
garage, or other enclosed structure, even if the doors or windows are
open.
* Apply first aid immediately to cuts and scrapes.
Wash the affected area and your hands with the cleanest water available
and with soap for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t
available, use alcohol-based hand gels.
